Actually, I feel pretty good about what you witnessed at two large grocery chains - food was past the date so they threw it out. Hooray.

Your points about quality of food are quite valid, however. A savvy buffet manager would watch the discards to learn which food items are unappealing and fix the problem with the cooks (or eliminate the item from the menu.) Uneaten food can be a learning opportunity for the restaurant staff.

Hey, maybe 20 UK pounds IS 20% of the dinner charge - it is in England and they are hosting the olympics. Gotta get it while you can.

If it tastes bad or smells bad - DO NOT EAT IT !! At the first taste, if bad, spit it out and do not swallow. Yes, it may be poor manners - would you rather be rude or sick for three days? (or dead.)

Same old story - the people in general are willing to vote for leaders who promise lots of government benefits and 'safety nets', but are not willing to pay taxes to support the cost.

Of course 'they' (sovereign nations) can do things like that ! Governments can control economic activity in any way they want. They can prohibit or limit money (or various goods) from entering or leaving They can decide the type of legal tender - only governments can issue legal tender

Wiring Euros to banks in other countries - the problem with that is the paper trail. Greece may put a limit on funds leaving the country - it could happen at any time, and they might even make it retroactive in some way (like a tax on transfers that have already happened.)

Yes, congratulations for this accomplishment. This is a wonderful example of a man who values education and learning for its' own sake. Unfortunately, his degree in classics may only open doors to jobs as a teacher of the classics, or he can clean toilets and take out the trash.
